Semi-Healthy Breakfast Choices
So let me start with how you need to take everything I say with a grain of salt, because I still definitely eat hot Cheetos for breakfast sometimes when I’m feeling like it.
Also, I’ll be honest— my entire life, I’ve never been a breakfast person. I don’t know what it is about my body, but I literally CANT eat breakfast until my body is totally awake. So on those days where I’m doing a morning hike or need to leave to work early, I’ll eat one of these options to help give me the energy for the rest of the day:
Whole Grain Avocado Toast w/Light Seasoning
This is a pretty basic recipe, just whole grain or whole wheat bread toasted with fresh avocado spread on it. To make it taste better, I throw a light sprinkle of “Everything But the Bagel” seasoning from Trader Joe’s, and an even lighter sprinkle of Tajín.
Then, I cut it up into triangles, because for some reason, bread always tastes better that way, lol.
Yogurt & Granola!
Again, I mean most of my Semi-Healthy Breakfast options are obvious ones that we all grew up with. And I guess, this is my karmic payback for never listening to my mom every morning when she’d try to get me to eat— but ANYWAYS, I’m ready now. And better late than never, right?
So here’s one of my other go-to’s for a fresh start on the day. Most of ya’ll know this about me, but I’ve been looking for more and more dairy-free alternatives because I’m so lactose sensitive (cue embarassing chuckle)— so I struck gold with this one! Culina Yogurt’s one of my absolute favorite yogurt brands, and here’s why: 1) Obvi, they’re dairy-free and plant-based. BUT it’s also super thick. May as well be thicc with 2 c’s because this yogurt’s not like most runny coconut yogurts that I’ve eaten. 2) It’s a Woman-Owned company! Based in Texas, but sold in stores all over the US. Ya’ll know how I love to support Women owned/led businesses! 3)THE FLAVOR!! Bourbon Vanilla?? dude. it tastes just like ice cream— which is a real treat, given that I can’t be having ice cream anymore.
Outside of those reasons, and the fact that each yogurt comes in a cute little reusable glass jar— I also like this brand because it’s only made out of 6 ingredients, so I know I’m not eating things made from chemical compositions that I can’t pronounce.
But yes— okay okay okay— I’ll get to the point. Some dairy-free yogurt & fresh granola paired together has become one of my favorite energy boosters in the morning. My mom’s actually one of those “homemade granola- keeps-it-in-a-jar-in-her-car” moms, so I usually just use hers, but I think you can use really any granola to pair with it! Just make sure there’s not too much sugar included in the ingredients, and you’re looking at more grains than anything else. I’m sure the crumbs from one of those inevitably crumby Nature Valley Bars would work too.
Almond Butter & Whole Grain Waffle
I’ve got to add a pic for this one, but I always eat it too fast to even take a pic!
But, here’s another one of my favorite semi-healthy breakfast options— a nut butter covered waffle with a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar on top! I toast the waffle until it’s warm but not so crispy that I can’t bend it, then I spread a dollar of almond butter on top, and sprinkle a little bit of cinnamon dolce on top. After that, I usually fold it in half and then eat it like a sandwich. If this style is super dry for you with all that almond butter, then I’d try adding a little bit of honey to it before folding it up.
** This will be a living thread that I’ll add to the more and more I learn about eating better!
